Personality disparagement featured prominently in Nigeria’s political campaign discourse, with discussions on the economy, security and infrastructure increasingly overshadowed by personal attacks, according to a 2027 election tracking report.
The analysis of 91 observations found that 63.73 per cent of the discourse fell under “other” issues, while the economy accounted for 9.89 per cent, security 6.59 per cent and infrastructure 5.49 per cent.
Also, analysts warned that personal attacks during discussions on national priorities could distort public understanding and undermine citizens’ right to know.

A single indicator that consistently determines how stakeholders represent one another is the high level of personality disparagement. In this tracking, we examined this indicator alongside policy and campaign issues.
We found that, beyond the expected use of personality disparagement in discussions categorised under other issues, it was significantly deployed in discussions about the economy, security and infrastructure.
Based on this outcome, our analysts note that deploying personality disparagement while discussing issues of national importance may blur the public’s understanding of the essence of these issues and undermine their right to know.
