FREETV, a national digital television platform, will launch in Nigeria on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, by Nigeria’s Federal Government (FG), providing households across the country with access to free digital television, more channels, clearer pictures and Nigerian content without monthly subscription fees.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that the FG announcement stated that the launch forms part of the delivery of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises inclusion, access to opportunity, job creation, local enterprise and the use of technology to improve everyday life for Nigerians.

The announcement notes that FreeTV is part of Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (NDSO) programme and is designed to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind as the country moves fully from analogue to digital broadcasting.

Through the platform, Nigerians will have access to more than 100 national, regional and state channels, including news, sports, movies, music, children’s programmes, educational content and dedicated Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo language channels.

It also noted that the service will be available through satellite, terrestrial transmission and the FreeTV mobile app, giving citizens access whether they live in major cities, towns, rural communities or areas that were not covered during earlier Digital Switch Over (DSO) pilot phases.

The statement added that Nigerians do not need to buy a new television to watch FreeTV. Existing televisions can work with compatible DVB T2 or DVB S2 decoders, while those who already have compatible free to air decoders may not need to purchase a new one.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (DG/NBC), Charles Ebuebu, said: “FreeTV speaks directly to President Bola Tinubu’s vision of Renewed Hope towards expanding access, creating opportunity and ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location or income, can benefit from the digital economy.

“With FreeTV, families across Nigeria can enjoy quality digital television without a monthly subscription, while our local content producers, technicians and young creatives gain new platforms and new jobs.

“The platform will also support Nigeria’s creative and broadcast economy through regional production studios in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano and Benin, creating new opportunities for content producers, technicians, editors, camera operators, sound engineers and young creatives.”

FG statement added that the final analogue switch off remains scheduled for December 31, 2028, and encouraged Nigerians to begin preparing by checking decoder compatibility and downloading the FreeTV app.

It urges that for official information, citizens should visit freetv.ng, email dso@nbc.gov.ng or contact the nearest NBC zonal or state office.

How Nigerians Can Access FreeTV from Home

FreeTV is Nigeria’s new free-to-air digital platform launched 17 June 2026. You don’t need a monthly subscription. Here’s how it works for regular households:

1. What You Need
– A Digital TV or Set-Top Box: If your TV is digital-ready and has DVB-T2, you can connect directly with an antenna. If it’s an older analogue TV, you’ll need a FreeTV-compatible set-top box.
– An Antenna: A UHF antenna for terrestrial signal, or a satellite dish if you’re using the satellite option. NIGCOMSAT is handling the satellite delivery, so most rural areas will use this.
– No Subscription, No Data Needed: The channels are free-to-air. You won’t pay monthly fees, and it doesn’t use your internet data.

2. How to Set It Up
1. Get the FreeTV Set-Top Box or Confirm Your TV is Digital: The boxes are being distributed through licensed dealers and partner vendors nationwide. NBC said distribution will be phased, starting with states already migrated from analogue.
2. Connect & Scan: Connect the box to your TV and antenna/dish, then run an auto-scan. The system will pick up all available FreeTV channels.
3. Start Watching: You’ll get 100+ channels covering news, sports, education, children’s programs, and entertainment in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin, and English.

3. What’s Different for Common People
– Free Access: No monthly bills like DSTV/GOTV. Once set up, it’s free.
– Local Languages: Channels are in multiple Nigerian languages, making education and news more accessible.
– Better Picture Quality: HD broadcasting replaces old analogue signal.
– Rural Reach: Satellite delivery means even areas without terrestrial coverage can get the signal through NIGCOMSAT.

4. Where to Get It
NBC and the Ministry of Information said distribution will be through accredited vendors and state offices. Keep an eye on NBC’s announcements for approved sales points in your state. Avoid buying from unverified sellers to avoid fake boxes.

5. How It Works Behind the Scenes
FreeTV uses scientific audience measurement, so broadcasters know what people watch in real time. That helps them produce content people actually want, and advertisers can support more local programming.

Bottom line: If you have a TV, you’ll only need a one-time setup with a FreeTV box and antenna/dish. After that, it’s free viewing.
