THIRTY-FIVE hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses have been officially transferred to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd, in a strategic push to advance the nation’s gas-powered transport system.

The handover ceremony took place at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, where Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, reaffirmed the company’s role in supporting Nigeria’s clean energy transition.

He noted that the initiative aligns with NNPC Ltd’s mission to expand the use of natural gas as a cleaner, more affordable and sustainable fuel alternative, adding that NNPC Ltd has made significant strides in gas supply, infrastructure development, and the establishment of distribution and retail networks.

Ojulari stated that the company’s ongoing contributions are pivotal to the success of the Federal Government’s broader energy reform strategy.

He also stressed that NNPC Ltd’s work supports both environmental sustainability and national economic development.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, emphasised that the buses serve beyond their transport function.

According to him, they symbolise an important shift towards economic relief, social fairness and ecological responsibility.

He linked the initiative directly to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a practical measure to cut commuting costs, ease reliance on petrol, and utilise Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for public benefit.

Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd, Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, highlighted the economic advantages of CNG adoption.

He said the transition reduces national dependency on petrol (PMS) and diesel (AGO), unlocks major cost savings, and strengthens the domestic gas value chain.

In his remarks, the Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, reaffirmed NNPC Ltd’s leadership in accelerating the commercialisation of CNG.

He maintained that the company remains at the forefront of the national clean energy agenda as momentum behind gas-powered transport grows.

He said the handover represents a key milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and achieve energy affordability and environmental sustainability.
