THE DELTA State government has reinforced its commitment to maritime security and infrastructure development, with several kilometres of roads and drainage channels constructed across the riverine areas of the state.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this during a courtesy visit by course participants from the Naval War College Nigeria (NWCN), Calabar, to Asaba on Monday.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Oborevwori highlighted that his administration, through the MORE Agenda, remains dedicated to fostering inclusive development and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

He reiterated the state’s role in Nigeria’s economy, being the highest producer of crude oil, and emphasised the necessity of maintaining peace in the riverine communities.

Oborevwori welcomed the 60-member NWCN delegation, led by Rear Admiral A.O. Olodude and Commodore C.U. Yahaya, acknowledging the strategic importance of their study tour focused on “Maritime Security: A Panacea for Viable Socio-Economic Development.”

He stressed that maritime security is a cornerstone for economic growth, given Delta State’s vast coastal expanse of approximately 163 kilometres along the Atlantic Ocean.

“The MORE Agenda prioritises riverine infrastructure development, despite its high costs, to connect and transform the maritime landscape. Before the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project commenced, the state had already constructed extensive road networks, drainage channels, and seven bridges,” the governor noted.

He also noted that to enhance public health in riverine communities, the state government has strengthened primary healthcare services, leveraging the Award-Winning Contributory Health Scheme to provide quality, affordable care for under-five children, prenatal care, and pregnant women.

Oborevwori also outlined several ongoing and completed infrastructure projects, including:

The Trans Warri-Ode-Itsekiri Road and Bridges.

An 18.17km road network linking Okerenkoko, Pepeama, and Kokodiagbene in Warri South-West LGA.

Phase II construction of a 2.5km Okerenkoko Township Road in Warri South-West LGA.

Rehabilitation of the 26.61km Bomadi/Gbaregolor Road in Bomadi LGA.

Rehabilitation of the 26.34km Ohoro/Bomadi/Gbaregolor Road in Bomadi LGA.

Additionally, the state continues to collaborate with the Federal Government in advancing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, a specialised institution aimed at boosting maritime education and research.

Furthermore, he said the Delta State government maintains regular security council meetings with key security agencies to preempt and address threats in both riverine and upland communities.

He added that the administration has also recruited personnel to bolster the Waterways Security Network and supports security agencies with logistics to enhance their operations.

“Delta State Oil Producing Communities (DESOPADEC) continues to provide critical infrastructure in oil-producing communities, ensuring equitable development. Maritime security remains a top priority as we strive to sustain peace in riverine areas, safeguarding our position as Nigeria’s leading crude oil producer,” Oborevwori affirmed.

He then urged the NWCN participants to seize the learning opportunities presented by their study tour and wished them a successful experience in Delta State.

Congratulates NUJ on 70th Anniversary

Meanwhile, Governor Oborevwori has extended congratulations to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary.

In a statement, the governor commended the NUJ leadership, led by President Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, for its contributions to ethical journalism and nation-building.

Recognising journalists as essential stakeholders in democracy, Oborevwori lauded their role in holding government accountable and shaping Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.

He advocated for improved welfare for media professionals and underscored the necessity for continuous learning in the fast-evolving field of information and communication technology (ICT).

“The NUJ’s 70th anniversary is a milestone reflecting decades of journalistic excellence and commitment to democratic principles. I commend the union’s leadership for its unwavering defence of press freedom and dedication to journalists’ welfare,” he stated.

Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering a free press, ensuring journalists can continue to contribute effectively to national development.
