DELTA STATE Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has issued a stern warning to site engineers overseeing state projects.
He stressed that they will be held accountable for any substandard work.
During an inspection of the Trans Warri Road and its associated bridges on Tuesday, he made it clear that engineers who fail to meet the required standards will face legal consequences.
Oborevwori expressed his dissatisfaction with the pace of the Trans Warri Road project, which has been delayed for 17 years.
He urged the contractor to accelerate the work, ensuring that the project will be completed within the next two years.
The governor emphasized his commitment to monitoring projects personally before any inauguration, as demonstrated by a recent inspection where he identified issues in a supposedly completed project.
“We will not tolerate substandard work,” Oborevwori affirmed.
“Any engineer who compromises will face the full weight of the law. We have procedures for certifying jobs, and they must be followed strictly.”
He assured the contractor of uninterrupted funding, promising that payment would be made promptly upon certification of the work done.
“Funding will not be an issue as long as the job is being done to standard. We expect the project to be completed in 18 months, and we will ensure it does not experience further delays.”
Oborevwori also stopped at the Olu of Warri Palace in Ode-Itsekiri, where he reassured the Itsekiri monarch, Ogiame Atuwatse III, that the project would be completed in time for his 5th coronation anniversary.
Oborevwori’s visit underscored his commitment to delivering the long-delayed project, which began under the administration of James Ibori in 2006 and continued through subsequent administrations.
The Commissioner for Works, Reuben Izeze, highlighted that 19 bridges along the main alignment had already been completed.
The Olu of Warri lauded Oborevwori and his predecessors for their persistent efforts, expressing hope for the project’s completion during his anniversary celebrations.
In addition to the Trans Warri Road, Governor Oborevwori also inspected the ongoing construction of Omadino Technical College.
He called for a meeting with the contractors to discuss ways to expedite the project’s completion.
