STANDING ON the cusp of national spotlight as the National Sports Commission (NSC), Ogun government has declared the state fully ready to host the 22nd National Sports Festival.
This follows a meticulous inspection of sports venues, accommodation centres, and logistics facilities by the Commission’s top leadership, setting the tone for what promises to be a landmark edition of Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event.
The inspection tour, led by NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, covered key sites earmarked for the Games, including the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Alake Sports Centre, Remo Stars Sports Complex, and Babcock University, which has been designated the athletes’ village.
Each site reflected extensive preparations, with infrastructural upgrades and support systems nearing final completion ahead of the festival’s official commencement on 16 May.
This year’s festival, dubbed the Gateway Games 2024, will run until 30 May, bringing together thousands of athletes and officials from every state of the federation.
With over 32 sporting disciplines on the schedule, the Games are expected to be one of the most expansive and inclusive in the event’s history, aligning with national objectives to deepen unity and excellence through sport.
Following the inspection, Mallam Dikko expressed strong confidence in Ogun’s organisational capacity and vision. “What I have seen here in Ogun is more than infrastructure.
It is intent, readiness, and ambition. Ogun is set to deliver a brilliant National Sports Festival that will raise the bar and define the standard for future games across Nigeria,” he said.
Governor Dapo Abiodun reaffirmed the state’s unwavering commitment to the success of the event. He described Ogun’s hosting of the Festival as both an honour and a profound responsibility.
“Every facility, every logistic, every detail has been prepared to showcase the best of Ogun and the promise of Nigeria. The Gateway Games will be a model of what’s possible when states align with national vision,” the Governor stated.
Beyond the immediate competitive spirit, the Festival stands as a strategic pillar in Nigeria’s broader sports development architecture.
As the central agency overseeing sports governance, the NSC continues to enforce standards and build synergy across government tiers.
The Gateway Games are expected to serve as a template for future initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, linking sports excellence with national development.
