SEQUEL TO the use of physical discipline leading to the tragic death of SS2 student Monday Arijo at Obada Grammar School, Idi-emi, the incident has cast a harsh spotlight on disciplinary practices in Ogun State schools.
Promptly, the Ogun State Government has taken immediate action by suspending the teacher alleged to have beaten Arijo, resulting in his demise,
The government also issued a query to the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, for permitting such punitive measures against state regulations.
Mrs. Onaolapo now faces disciplinary action and was given 24 hours to explain her role in the incident.
Also, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, in a condolence letter to the Arijo family, expressed grief and promised justice for the deceased, describing the young man as a promising student whose loss will be felt deeply within the school community and across the state.
Signed by the Permanent Secretary, the letter called for comfort for the family and peace for the departed.
Furthermore, the incident prompted the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, to lead a government delegation in offering condolences to the Arijo family.
During his visit, Prof. Arigbabu reinforced the state’s position against corporal punishment, reminding educators that disciplinary actions must adhere to safe and humane standards.
He emphasized, “Teachers must uphold world standards in student discipline, steering away from corporal punishment, which risks such tragic outcomes.”
Thereafter, the Education Ministry convened a committee to investigate the incident thoroughly.
The probe aims to prevent further cases and uphold policies that create safe learning environments in Ogun State schools.
Prof. Arigbabu further stressed the need for discipline without physical harm and warned teachers of strict penalties for any breaches.
Second Delegation and Ongoing Investigation
On Tuesday, a second government delegation returned to the family to provide continued support. The delegation reaffirmed the state’s commitment to transparency and due process in understanding the circumstances surrounding Arijo’s death. Meanwhile, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta has undertaken a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death, which will inform further government response.
Arigbabu cautioned teachers statewide to avoid corporal punishment, noting that “alternative forms of discipline are effective and essential to maintaining a healthy school environment.” He reiterated that the state’s policy aligns with global educational standards, advocating non-violent, constructive discipline. He noted that compliance with these standards would be monitored closely, with sanctions awaiting violators.
Expressing concern for both the family and the wider school community, Prof. Arigbabu assured that Ogun State prioritizes student welfare. He emphasized the role of teachers in fostering safe learning spaces, where students can thrive without fear. “We owe our young ones an environment conducive to learning, free from harmful disciplinary methods,” he added.
Further Government Support and Family Response
Special Adviser on Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, assured the Arijo family of the state’s ongoing support. She stated that Ogun’s administration is committed to preventing similar incidents by enforcing stronger oversight and compliance among teachers and school administrators. “We are grieving with the family and taking steps to ensure this does not recur in any school within Ogun State,” she said.
Representing the family, Mr. Abdullateef Oduntan voiced appreciation for the government’s response. He noted the family’s desire for accountability but clarified that they are not seeking legal action, hoping instead that the state will implement policies to prevent further tragedies.
The Ogun State Government continues to review disciplinary protocols across its school system to reinforce safe, effective teaching practices. As the investigation unfolds, school authorities are urged to implement non-violent disciplinary methods, safeguarding student welfare while maintaining educational standards.
