JUST RELEASED by OpenAI is GPT-5, its latest artificial intelligence model, introducing expanded health-related functions and advanced reasoning capabilities.

The company, on its X handle stated that GPT-5 can now identify potential serious health concerns, including cancer, by analysing user-provided information.

According to OpenAI, the model achieved the highest scores to date in internal health benchmarks developed with input from more than 250 physicians and tested on real-world medical scenarios.

At the launch event, streamed live, OpenAI highlighted health as one of GPT-5’s most significant upgrades.

The system can translate complex medical documents, help patients understand treatment options, and prepare informed questions for medical consultations.

While stressing that GPT-5 is not a substitute for professional medical evaluation, OpenAI described it as a valuable supplementary tool for both patients and healthcare providers.

One case presented involved Carolina, a user diagnosed with three types of cancer in a single week.

She used ChatGPT to interpret a biopsy report, allowing her to grasp key information before meeting her doctor.

OpenAI said she continued using the system to weigh risks, evaluate treatment paths, and prepare for clinical discussions, including decisions where medical opinions were divided.

Chief executive Sam Altman described GPT-5 as “smarter, faster, and more useful” than earlier versions, claiming it operates at “PhD-level” expertise in multiple domains.

The company said the model shows fewer inaccuracies, improved logical reasoning, and enhanced coding proficiency.

The launch comes as other technology companies advance their own AI offerings, with Anthropic and X’s Grok both making similar performance claims.

Experts have however warned that AI growth is outpacing governance, urging stronger regulatory frameworks.

Also, OpenAI confirmed that GPT-5 will be available to all users from Thursday, August 8, with a free tier included.

The company adds that its priorities will remain on improving accuracy, ensuring safety, and supporting transparent AI use.
