CERTIFICATION UNDER version 4.0.1 of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCIDSS) has been attained by Union Bank of Nigeria (UBN), meeting global requirements for the protection of payment card account data.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the certification, which took effect on 11 August 2026, confirms that the bank securely stores, processes and transmits customers’ credit and debit card information.
PCIDSS sets technical and operational requirements for protecting environments where payment card account data is stored, processed or transmitted.
The certification also strengthens protection against payment card data breaches and financial fraud while reinforcing public and customer confidence.
The assessment covered network infrastructure, card issuance, ATM and POS transaction acquiring, payment processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback, dispute resolution and retail banking. Union Bank received certification in the Service Provider category.
Also, the process followed a sustained engagement conducted over a full year, incorporating quarterly assessments and support from departmental, business and functional heads across the bank in partnership with security firm Digital Encode.
CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor (QSA), also carried out the final independent audit.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said the certification reflected the bank’s commitment to protecting customer information.
“The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank. This certification reaffirms that our payment systems and processes meet a rigorous global standard, and it reflects the discipline of colleagues across the Bank who work every day to keep customer data safe,” she said.
Moreover, the renewal ensures that UBN maintains unbroken PCIDSS certification in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s requirement for banks to sustain continuous compliance without any gap.
