A LARGE-scale tree-planting exercise has been launched at Bodo City Girls Secondary School in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State through a partnership between Polaris Bank and the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF).
The project is aimed at tackling carbon emissions and promoting sustainable environmental practices in local communities.
Addressing participants at the event, Polaris Bank’s Divisional Head for South-South, Mr. Raphael Abiaziem, represented by Mr. Ejike Aroh, Business Development Manager of Garrison Branch, said the initiative reflects the Bank’s ongoing commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities.
He stressed that the exercise is aligned with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, adding that it goes beyond tree planting to include climate awareness and long-term ecosystem recovery.
“This project is not just about planting trees; it is about safeguarding our environment, reducing carbon footprint, and raising awareness on climate action,” Abiaziem said.
“By planting fruit-bearing and economic trees, we are helping communities build resilience, improve food security, and restore degraded ecosystems.”
He emphasised that climate change poses one of the greatest global challenges and requires urgent collective response.
Abiaziem noted that financial institutions have a responsibility to provide leadership in supporting initiatives that deliver a more sustainable future.
The Nigeria Conservation Foundation acknowledged Polaris Bank’s support and highlighted the ecological and social benefits expected from the project.
According to the Foundation, the planted trees will provide shade, prevent soil erosion, serve as windbreakers, and produce edible fruits that will benefit both students and the wider community.
NCF Field Officer, Mr. Alex Jorbedom, said the project has targeted 500 trees for planting within the school premises, including species such as avocado and native pear.
He explained that each tree has been planted with protective mesh and confirmed that the Foundation will conduct follow-up visits to create awareness among students on the importance of caring for the trees.
Polaris Bank explained that the initiative forms part of its wider sustainability roadmap, which integrates climate action and community development into its long-term growth strategy.
The Bank stated that through partnerships with organisations such as the NCF, it will continue to advance projects that foster environmental protection and strengthen social impact across Nigeria.
