Revitalising Aba: Port Harcourt Road Reconstruction Sparks Economic Revival

THE LONG-awaited reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road, Aba, is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the city’s economic and infrastructural resurgence.

The project, awarded to construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, has rekindled optimism among residents and business owners who had long endured the decline of this critical commercial artery.

For years, the deterioration of Port Harcourt Road crippled economic activity in Aba, a city historically renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and industrial prowess.

Once a thriving hub linking Enugu, Rivers State, and beyond, the road’s collapse had stifled trade and business, forcing many to seek alternatives or relocate entirely.

However, with the near completion of this ambitious reconstruction, hope has returned.

The scope of the project encompasses a three-lane carriageway stretching 5.7 kilometres, alongside the rehabilitation of Asa Road, covering 1.1 kilometres.

This overhaul includes the installation of new binder and wearing courses, as well as the implementation of street lighting for enhanced safety and accessibility.

Additionally, the initiative integrates essential earthworks and stormwater control measures to mitigate flooding and prolong the road’s lifespan.

Project Manager Christian Kloepfel highlighted the company’s commitment to community engagement and sustainable development. Julius Berger has employed 17 security personnel from the Aba community, reinforcing both site safety and local job creation.

Moreover, appointing a local indigene as the project’s Public Relations Officer has facilitated seamless communication between stakeholders, fostering trust and transparency.

Environmental sustainability remains central to the project’s execution. Julius Berger collaborated with local communities to establish a designated construction waste dump site, ensuring responsible disposal practices.

By levelling and spreading waste evenly, the company has minimised environmental degradation, aligning with global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards.

Recent on-site observations confirm that significant progress has been made, with Julius Berger currently focusing on drainage systems and U-channel installations at the Enugu-Port Harcourt highway junction.

As sections of the road reopen, businesses along the corridor are beginning to thrive again, signalling a long-overdue economic revival.

The near-completion of Port Harcourt Road is more than just an infrastructural feat—it represents the restoration of Aba’s commercial lifeline.

As traffic flows resume and businesses regain momentum, residents attest that the city is poised to reclaim its reputation as the economic powerhouse of South-Eastern Nigeria.
