NEW YEAR greetings from the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, set out plans to consolidate progress recorded in Nigeria’s power sector in 2025, with 2026 identified as a year for delivering more reliable, accessible and sustainable electricity nationwide.
He said the outgoing year involved laying foundations across the sector, even as challenges persisted adding that measurable milestones were recorded, particularly in stabilising the national grid and achieving historic landmarks in power generation and distribution, describing these outcomes as the result of sustained effort within the sector.
Speaking in his New Year message to Nigerians and the people of Oyo State in particular, Adelabu said the sector’s progress in 2025 was shaped by focused interventions and persistence.
He also acknowledged that the year came with difficulties, including grid stability concerns and inefficiencies in distribution, but said progress was achieved despite those obstacles.
He said sustained efforts under the Presidential Power Initiative, also known as the Siemens Deal, played a critical role in strengthening the national grid stating that the initiative contributed to reducing the frequency of grid collapses that characterised previous years.
Also, he expressed confidence that the ongoing Phase One of the Presidential Power Initiative would further enhance grid resilience and make power disruptions increasingly rare.
Adelabu further extended his new year greetings to Nigerians with particular goodwill to the people of Oyo State stating that the coming year as one filled with promise and measurable progress within the power sector and represented an opportunity to build on the groundwork already laid.
“As we stand at the threshold of a new year, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to every Nigerian, and with particular affection to my kinsmen and women in Oyo State. May the new year usher in light, progress, and shared prosperity,” he said.
Reflecting on 2025, Adelabu acknowledged the patience and resilience shown by Nigerians as the power sector navigated complex challenges added citizens demonstrated understanding as issues related to grid stability and distribution inefficiencies persisted during the year.
He described the steadfastness of Nigerians as a foundation for building a stronger and more resilient energy future, expressing gratitude for the support and understanding of citizens, saying their resilience remained central to ongoing efforts to improve electricity supply saying the experience of the outgoing year stressed the importance of sustained commitment and collective responsibility in strengthening the sector.
Addressing the people of Oyo State directly, he reaffirmed his commitment to representing their aspirations at the national level saying their support continued to inspire his dedication to national service as he noted that his role in the power sector was guided by a responsibility to serve both the nation and his home state.
Looking ahead, Adelabu reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering reliable, accessible and sustainable electricity to power homes, industries and economic growth and said the focus in 2026 would be on consolidating achievements and expanding the impact of ongoing initiatives.
Also, he outlined key priorities for the year, including deepening efforts to enhance grid stability and expanding transmission infrastructure.
He said the government would strengthen collaboration with distribution companies to improve service delivery and accelerate metering initiatives across communities.
Adelabu said these priorities were essential to ensuring that gains recorded in previous years translated into improved electricity supply for Nigerians, that attention would remain on practical measures aimed at improving reliability and access across the country.
He further stated that the Light Up Nigeria Initiative would remain a flagship priority and said the initiative would sustain its focus on industrial clusters and agricultural hubs, with the aim of stimulating economic growth and job creation.
He said these areas remained central to broader efforts to support productivity and development through improved electricity access.
Adelabu also emphasised the government’s commitment to renewable energy development, saying solar and hydropower would continue to play a role in extending electricity access to underserved and rural areas.
He described renewable energy as part of efforts to achieve sustainable electricity supply nationwide and stressed that achieving the outlined goals would require collective effort.
He called for unity involving state governments, local communities, the private sector and citizens and said cooperation across all levels remained essential to protecting infrastructure and improving service delivery.
“Protecting power infrastructure and adopting energy efficient practices are vital contributions every Nigerian can make. As we step into the new year, let us do so with shared responsibility and renewed optimism. The work continues, and our resolve is stronger than ever,” he said.
