PROFOUND TRIBUTES have followed the passing of Dr Christopher Kolade, with President Bola Tinubu describing the late broadcaster, diplomat, and corporate leader as “one of Nigeria’s intellectual treasures” and “a custodian of our enterprise history.”
The President’s statement, personally signed and released on Thursday, October 9, conveyed deep sorrow over the loss of a man he called “inimitable” and “among the finest of men.”
According to President Tinubu, Dr Kolade, who died at the age of 92, embodied brilliance, statesmanship, diligence, and unimpeachable integrity throughout his long career in public service, education, and corporate leadership.
The President stated, “I received with profound sadness the news of the passing of the inimitable Dr Christopher Kolade, a broadcaster and boardroom guru who is one of Nigeria’s intellectual treasures.”
He recalled the late Kolade’s exceptional impact on Nigeria’s corporate and academic landscape, noting his pivotal role in shaping modern business ethics and governance.
The statement highlighted that Dr Kolade “was a custodian of our enterprise history, especially concerning corporate governance and human resources management,” describing him as “a principal figure in reputable institutions like the Lagos Business School.”
The President emphasised Dr Kolade’s unshakable commitment to transparency and accountability, describing him as both “a boardroom icon” and “a patriot.”
He acknowledged his tenure as Chief Executive and Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, where his leadership modelled the highest standards of ethical management.
President Tinubu also commended Dr Kolade’s distinguished service to the nation, which spanned broadcasting, diplomacy, and education.
“He served Nigeria dutifully, with honesty and great dedication,” the statement read.
“From working as a colonial-era education officer to serving as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK) and Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Dr Kolade left ineffaceable stamps of distinction in every endeavour, whether in the boardroom, on panels, or public office.”
The President fondly recalled Dr Kolade’s humanitarian contributions through the Christopher Kolade Foundation, noting his consistent advocacy for social causes.
“I recall his many humanitarian interventions through the Christopher Kolade Foundation, especially his support for sickle cell patients, a cause to which he donated a chunk of his earnings,” the statement added.
While expressing grief over the loss, President Tinubu urged the nation to celebrate Dr Kolade’s life of service and virtue.
“Dr Kolade’s passing is agonising, yet we must celebrate his life and legacy,” he said.
“He lived an exemplary life and immortalised himself in his uncommon service to our nation and humanity.”
The President described Dr Kolade as “a true Nigerian, selfless and resilient,” whose example continues to inspire generations.
“He will remain an inspiration for us and for many generations,” the statement concluded.
“He was a representation of the true Nigerian, selfless and resilient. May God Almighty, whom he served so faithfully, grant him eternal rest.”
Dr Christopher Kolade, who passed away peacefully in Osun State on 8 October 2025, was a former Director-General of the NBC, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), and long-serving corporate leader known for his emphasis on ethical leadership.
He also taught Corporate Governance and Human Resource Management at Lagos Business School and served as Pro-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University.
Throughout his career, Dr Kolade was celebrated for his commitment to discipline, responsibility, and moral excellence. His enduring influence in the fields of media, business, and education remains evident across generations of professionals and scholars.
