GODSWILL Akpabio, president, Nigeria’s Senate, has delivered a passionate appeal to the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) during the ongoing 148th Session in Geneva, Switzerland, calling for concerted efforts to restore lasting peace to the conflict-ridden region of Gaza.

Speaking at the assembly, Akpabio emphasized the urgent need for nations to transcend political difference and prioritize humanitarian concerns, advocating for concrete actions to bring sustainable peace to Gaza.

He underscored the necessity for resolutions addressing critical issues such as access to humanitarian aid, restoration of normalcy in Gaza, and the pursuit of a permanent truce. He urged delegates to prioritize the cessation of hostilities and the release of hostages and prisoners of war as crucial steps toward initiating negotiations for lasting peace.

In his impassioned address, Akpabio highlighted the moral imperative for collective action, stressing that the plight of innocent civilian, including children deprived of basic necessities, demands a unified response from the international community.

Acknowledging the challenges of reconciling divergent viewpoints, Akpabio urged delegates to set aside ego and national interests, emphasizing the shared humanity that binds all nations together in the pursuit of peace.

Expressing his frustration with previous attempts at resolution, Akpabio urged for a collaborative effort in drafting comprehensive resolutions that address the multifaceted challenges facing Gaza. He called for the establishment of a drafting committee to formulate actionable resolutions before the conclusion of the assembly.

Nigeria’s Senate President also firmly reiterated his plea for unity and compassion, urging delegates to prioritize the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and work towards tangible solutions that reflect the principles of empathy and solidarity, adding that his impassioned appeal underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises and promoting peace in conflict-affected regions around the world.
