THE PROPOSED constitutional amendment to establish State Police Services has been transmitted to all 36 State Houses of Assembly, with the National Assembly (NASS) seeking their resolutions within 30 days.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, said the bill was sent to the state legislatures on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, for consideration and approval.
Ogunlana clarified that the 30-day period represents an administrative timeframe, not a constitutional deadline, as the Constitution does not prescribe a specific period for state assemblies to respond.
The NASS acknowledged the constitutional responsibilities and independence of the state legislatures in considering the proposed amendment.
At least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly must approve a constitutional alteration bill before the process can be concluded.
Both chambers of the NASS passed the State Police Bill weeks earlier as part of efforts to address the country’s security challenges.
The NASS also said it would proceed with the next steps after receiving the state assemblies’ resolutions, reaffirming its commitment to due process, institutional cooperation and compliance with the Constitution.
