NIGERIAN PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu welcomed his Ghanaian counterpart, John Dramani Mahama, to the State House in Abuja on Thursday.
The visit marks Mahama’s first official trip to Nigeria since taking office on January 7, 2025.
Arriving at the Presidential Villa around 2:30pm, Mahama was received by President Tinubu, reflecting the longstanding ties between the two West African nations.
The leaders discussed ways to enhance diplomatic cooperation and address pressing regional challenges within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
This high-level meeting follows a series of interactions between the two presidents.
On December 17, 2024, Mahama visited Tinubu in Abuja after winning Ghana’s general election with 56.55% of the vote, defeating Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Before that, Tinubu congratulated Mahama via telephone, expressing optimism that his leadership would foster stability within ECOWAS.
Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, returned to power after a decisive electoral victory. His renewed mandate underscores growing regional expectations for improved governance and economic progress.
Presidency hinted that the talks in Abuja focused on strengthening bilateral trade, tackling security challenges, and reinforcing democratic principles within the West African sub-region.
Previously, both leaders have emphasized the need for transparent governance and regional stability as pillars of economic development.
