Tinubu Pledges Stable Power Supply Before End Of Tenure

UNINTERRUPTED ELECTRICITY supply remains a core promise of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, with the Federal Government reaffirming its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s power sector before the end of his term.

This assurance was delivered by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Saturday, August 1, 2025, during the commissioning of the Kwaru 1X15 MVA 33/11KV Injection Substation in the Ikotun-Egbe axis of Lagos State.

The project is part of efforts to boost supply in communities including Abaranje, Isijola, Igando Road, Omoboriowo, Okerube, and surrounding areas.

Speaking at the ceremony, Adelabu highlighted President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as a strategic response to Nigeria’s energy challenges, stating, “Energy is not merely a commodity; it is the backbone of economic growth and job creation.

This administration continues to implement a multi-pronged approach, which has yielded some remarkable achievements.”

According to him, the newly commissioned substation will reduce operational challenges, support SMEs, stimulate economic activity, and generate new employment opportunities in Lagos State.

He reiterated that the FG is focused on strengthening power generation, transmission, and distribution nationwide.

Outlining recent reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Adelabu cited the Electricity Act 2023 as a pivotal milestone, which decentralised and liberalised the sector, activated 12 state electricity markets, and initiated a National Integrated Electricity Policy—ending a 24-year policy vacuum.

He disclosed that over $2 billion in fresh investments have been secured to expand electricity access, and a transition towards full sector commercialisation increased revenues by 70 percent in 2024.

Installed generation capacity has grown from 13GW to 14GW, with Nigeria reaching a peak generation of 5,801.44 MW and a daily energy record of 128,370.75MWh on March 4, 2025.

The Minister also noted progress under the Siemens Project, which has added over 700 MW to transmission capacity.

He announced that ₦700 billion has been mobilised from FAAC for the Presidential Metering Initiative, while a $500 million World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) is expected to provide 3.45 million additional meters.

Despite these advances, Adelabu admitted that distribution remains a significant bottleneck.

“Loss levels exceed regulatory thresholds, market remittances are insufficient, and customer complaints continue. We are working closely with DisCos to overcome these challenges,” he said.

He commended Ikeja Electric for completing the substation within 12 months, describing them as one of Nigeria’s top-performing DisCos.

“We acknowledge their diligence, planning, and technical strength, and encourage continuous improvement in access and service quality,” he said.

Adelabu concluded with a renewed commitment from the Federal Ministry of Power to support initiatives that guarantee reliable, affordable electricity for all Nigerians.
