FOLLOWING THE escalating tensions in the Middle East, United States President Donald Trump has issued a stern ultimatum to Hamas, demanding the immediate release of all hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
In a late-night post on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that failure to comply would result in severe repercussions, stating, “not a single Hamas member will be safe if you don’t do as I say.”
This assertive stance aligns with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow to dismantle the Palestinian militant group.
Trump’s directive follows the White House’s confirmation of direct talks with Hamas regarding the hostages, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy, which has historically avoided direct engagement with entities designated as terrorist organisations.
Emphasising the urgency, Trump declared, “Release all of the Hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you. This is your last warning!”
He also advised Hamas leadership to evacuate Gaza while possible and addressed Gaza’s residents, suggesting a promising future contingent upon the hostages’ release.
As of now, Israel reports 59 hostages still held in Gaza, with up to 24 believed to be alive.
The ceasefire established in January, which facilitated hostage exchanges, is now precarious.
Hamas has stipulated that it will release the remaining prisoners only if Israel ceases its military actions.
Hamas Defiant
In response to Trump’s ultimatum, Hamas has dismissed the threats, asserting that hostages will only be freed in exchange for a lasting ceasefire.
The group accused both Trump and Netanyahu of attempting to renege on the January agreement, which encompassed negotiations for hostage releases, a permanent ceasefire, and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
The situation remains volatile, with the potential for renewed conflict if diplomatic efforts fail. The international community watches closely as the deadline approaches, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this escalating crisis.
