THE LATEST cohort of 191 Nigerian scholars, including 44 Chevening and 147 Commonwealth recipients, has returned to Nigeria after completing postgraduate and fellowship programmes in the United Kingdom (UK).
These scholars, recognised for their leadership potential and commitment to national progress, were honoured at welcome ceremonies in Abuja and Lagos on February 19 and 20, respectively.
The Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships, funded by the UK Government, have long provided transformative opportunities for Nigerians, equipping them with specialised skills to address critical challenges.
Over the decades, these programmes have produced professionals shaping key sectors in Nigeria and beyond.
At the Lagos event, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter praised the scholars for their accomplishments.
He encouraged them to apply their newly acquired expertise to drive innovation and change in Nigeria.
He stressed the importance of collaboration, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to educational partnerships with Nigeria.
Among the recipients, Chevening Scholar Daniel Onwe, who studied International Law and Development at the University of Nottingham, described the programme as a life-changing experience.
As a disability rights activist, he highlighted how the UK’s inclusive society broadened his perspectives.
He noted that beyond academics, engaging with diverse cultures and global political issues had been invaluable.
A Commonwealth Scholar specialising in International Energy Law & Policy at the University of Dundee shared how the scholarship deepened their expertise in global energy issues.
The opportunity to study in a world-class institution and network with professionals from various backgrounds was both intellectually stimulating and career-enhancing.
Expressing gratitude, the scholar looked forward to applying this knowledge to Nigeria’s energy sector.
The scholars were formally inducted into the Chevening and Commonwealth alumni community in Nigeria, receiving completion certificates to mark the occasion.
Many reflected on their academic journeys, pledging to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
Since 1983, Chevening Scholarships, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and partner institutions, have supported nearly 10,000 scholars in the last five years alone.
The programme boasts a global network of over 55,000 alumni. Similarly, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) has awarded scholarships to over 31,000 individuals since 1960, producing distinguished global leaders, diplomats, Nobel laureates, and academics.
Nigeria has one of the largest alumni communities, with more than 4,500 past scholars, including over 3,000 Commonwealth and 1,500 Chevening alumni.
Many are making significant strides in governance, business, academia, and civil society.
Their contributions highlight the lasting impact of international education in driving national progress and strengthening the UK-Nigeria partnership.
