STUDENT DISCUSSION dominated discussions as the Students’ Union Government of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) led by its president, Comrade Ogar Favour Johobe, met with university management on Monday to review the proposed adjustment in school fees and assess ongoing development initiatives across the institution.

The engagement, which the union described as strategic and outcome-driven, focused on current infrastructural upgrades, academic reforms, and financial considerations affecting the student body.

University management had earlier outlined a series of development projects designed to strengthen practical learning and improve the overall campus environment.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francesca Bassey, plans are advancing for a university bakery, a wood-making centre, and a contractor workshop, all aimed at expanding hands-on training opportunities.

Management also disclosed a new partnership with a Chinese university that will enable students to earn additional language certification through structured programmes under the collaboration.

During the briefing, the VC also confirmed the construction of a standard university stadium as part of wider efforts to enhance sports development and student engagement.

She added that 100 new computers had been supplied to the Faculty of Engineering, forming part of ongoing investments in academic facilities.

She also disclosed that hostel upgrades are nearing completion, with new beds and bunks expected to boost accommodation quality once installation finishes.

Management further stated that free campus-wide internet is now accessible to students, following the activation of improved connectivity across the institution.

Renovation projects were also highlighted, including the refurbishment of the university’s main gate, installation of 100 streetlights, provision of new classroom boards, and upgrades to restrooms and lecturers’ offices.

On academic matters, the VC addressed students’ concerns regarding previous irregularities in result processing.

She assured the SUG that reforms are underway to ensure transparency and seamless access to academic records.

The university emphasised that the review process is ongoing and aimed at eliminating delays previously experienced by students.

A major point of discussion at the meeting was the proposed 70 percent increase in school fees.

To this, the SUG appealed for a downward review, stating that the economic realities faced by many students and families required a more considerate approach.

Also, the union proposed a maximum increase of 10 percent and urged management to re-evaluate the current proposal while discussions between both parties remain active, with further deliberations expected as consultations continue.

On the long run, management informed the union that students unable to pay fees immediately could access the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) loan scheme to ease their financial burden.

According to the update from management, refunds have been issued to students who had paid earlier but subsequently received NELFUND disbursements, ensuring that no student bears double financial responsibility.

In its closing remarks, the SUG president, Johobe, commended the university management for what it described as a transparent engagement and a demonstration of commitment to student welfare.

The union further stated that it would continue to advocate for policies that protect the interests of all students across the institution, while maintaining constructive dialogue with management as development efforts progress.
