US Mission Urges Visa Applicants To Use Official Sources For Travel Information

RELIANCE ON official government sources for visa information has been urged by the United States (US) mission in Nigeria as it advised applicants to seek accurate and updated guidance on travel requirements and procedures.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that the mission said in an X post on Monday that applicants should verify visa rules, categories, and requirements through its official website, travel.state.gov, noting that policies are subject to regular updates.

The platform, managed by the US Department of State, provides guidance for immigrant and non immigrant visa applicants, including application steps, required documentation, interview procedures, processing timelines, and country specific eligibility criteria.

“Make sure you are getting official information about U.S. visa policies. Please always check official sites for travel guidance. Visit http://travel.state.gov to learn more,” the post reads.

The mission warned that reliance on unofficial sources could result in misinformation, delays, or errors during the application process.

It added that visa policies may change due to administrative updates, security considerations, or diplomatic factors, making it necessary for applicants to check for updates regularly.

Applicants were also advised to confirm requirements with their nearest US embassy or consulate before submitting applications or making travel plans.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that the mission said the notice is aimed at improving compliance, reducing errors, and ensuring applicants follow correct procedures when applying for US visas.

The directive comes days after the US Department of State directed non-emergency government employees and their family members to leave its embassy in Abuja due to a deteriorating security situation in Nigeria.

On April 9, the US embassy in Abuja said it had closed for visa appointments and asked applicants to check their email for details on rescheduled appointments.
