RENOWNED JOURNALIST, Yomi Odunuga has been appointed Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
This was contained in a statement released on Thursday which confirmed that the appointment takes immediate effect.
Before assuming this new role, Odunuga served as Deputy Editor at The Nation newspaper, in Abuja, where he was responsible for leading special interviews and crafting incisive political analyses.
With a journalism career spanning over 27 years, his professional journey reflects a consistent commitment to truth, political insight, and media excellence.
Odunuga’s foray into journalism began at The Punch newspapers as a proofreader, where his passion for the craft swiftly propelled him into field reporting.
His steady rise through the ranks saw him serve as State House Correspondent at the Presidency for The Punch, where he anchored two influential columns, Life in Abuja and Inside Aso Rock.
His critical perspectives on national politics earned him widespread recognition and led to his appointment as Abuja Bureau Chief and subsequently Group Political Editor in 2006.
In the years that followed, he joined The Nation as Assistant Editor and Abuja Bureau Chief.
There, he revived his popular Punch column under a new title, Knucklehead, a platform that allowed him to continue his weekly critiques of Nigeria’s political landscape.
In 2019, Odunuga was tapped to serve as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.
He held this role until 2023, after which he returned to The Nation as Deputy Editor.
Widely regarded as a journalist of integrity, Odunuga is also known for his poetic voice and lyrical writing style.

A fellow journalist, Bisi Olaniyi described it as a well-earned elevation, referencing their time at Punch Nigeria Limited and praising Odunuga’s long-standing commitment to hard work and honesty.
Olaniyi said Odunuga’s new role places him at the heart of federal communication strategy, where his depth of experience in political journalism is expected to strengthen the media operations of the SGF’s office.
