THE OFFICE of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has formally confirmed the appointment of veteran journalist Yomi Odunuga as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to SGF George Akume.
This settles the confusion stirred by a prior contradictory statement from its Directorate of Information.
Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, issued a clarifying statement on Saturday confirming that the appointment received Akume’s approval on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
Odunuga, according to the statement, has since assumed his duties and commenced official responsibilities on the same day.
The SGF’s office attributed the earlier mix-up to the ongoing documentation process, a routine requirement under civil service regulations.
“Mr Odunuga’s appointment received the approval of SGF Akume on Thursday, July 10, 2025, and he was immediately mandated to commence active functions,” Kuanum stated.
It was also noted that Odunuga promptly issued a press release in his official capacity debunking reports linking the SGF to the APC National Chairman position.
The clarification came a day after Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the OSGF, publicly denied the appointment, claiming that no official announcement had been made and labelling circulating reports as misleading.
That denial now stands in direct contradiction to Saturday’s confirmation.
Kuanum reaffirmed that Odunuga’s appointment followed due process and reiterated that documentation procedures were ongoing and entirely standard.
He urged the public to disregard conflicting reports and confirmed that Odunuga had the authority to act on behalf of the SGF in all media-related matters.
The statement further highlighted the SGF’s confidence in Odunuga’s capacity to enhance the image of the office.
“The SGF reiterates his confidence in the capacity of Mr Odunuga to bring his wealth of experience and proven track record as a journalist to bear on the overall image of the Office of the SGF,” the statement read.
Odunuga, known for his decades-long presence in political journalism, previously served as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy Senate President during the 9th National Assembly.
He also held the role of Deputy Editor at The Nation newspaper and is recognised for his incisive political columns.
