Police Launch Digital Tinted Glass Permit System to Tackle Abuse, Curb Harassment

NTIONWIDE ROLLOUT of secure digital system for tinted glass permits begins. The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it has resumed the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) across the country through a newly digitised platform, responding to escalating public outcry over the harassment of motorists using factory-fitted tinted windows.

The initiative, approved by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

He described the rollout as “secure and user-friendly”, accessible via possap.gov.ng, and part of a broader commitment to transparency, accountability, and citizen-focused policing.

Adejobi stated that the system’s reactivation is not only a response to citizens’ concerns but a strategic move to confront the security challenges posed by the misuse of tinted vehicles.

“With modern automobiles increasingly manufactured with tinted windows, it has become essential to provide a standardised system that accommodates legitimate use while ensuring public safety,” he said.

Tinted windows, while common in modern vehicles for reasons of comfort and aesthetics, have long posed operational difficulties for law enforcement.

According to the police, criminals often exploit them for illicit activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, “one-chance” scams, and other forms of banditry.

The new digital system is designed to distinguish legitimate users—such as those with medical exemptions or members of the security community—from bad actors.

This effort is also expected to improve investigative efficiency and fortify national security operations.

“Their use hampers police visibility and impedes effective law enforcement, thereby contributing to public insecurity,” the statement noted.

The revamped permit application process includes identity verification through National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), biometric data capture, and comprehensive background checks.

Permits will be issued as QR-coded digital documents, with a streamlined processing timeline of just 72 hours.

Applicants can now complete the entire procedure online, eliminating the need for physical visits or manual documentation, a key feature in preventing bureaucratic delays and opportunities for corruption.

To ensure a smooth transition, the police said it has approved a 30-day compliance window effective tomorrow, Thursday, 1 May. Motorists are expected to register within this grace period, after which active enforcement will commence.

“Enforcement will commence at the end of this period,” Adejobi warned, adding that any officers found guilty of extortion or harassment during enforcement “will be decisively dealt with in accordance with extant disciplinary procedures.”

The IGP also stressed that the reactivation forms part of a broader push towards technologically driven, citizen-oriented policing.

The police then urged Nigerians to embrace the system, describing it as a critical tool for enhancing public trust and ensuring safer roads.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to a transparent and secure permit process that respects the rights of motorists while supporting broader security objectives,” Adejobi said.

How to Apply for the Tinted Glass Permit

The NPF also notified that it has reactivated its portal for tinted glass permits through a secure, user-friendly digital platform available at https://possap.gov.ng.

According to the Force, the application process includes identity verification using the applicant’s National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), alongside biometric capture and background screening.

Applicants are urged to take cognizance of the fact that digital permits are issued with embedded QR codes, and processing is completed within 72 hours.

Application Steps to follow:
Step 1: Visit the Tinted Glass Permit portal and click Request a Service.
Step 2: Select your applicant category – Individual or Corporate/NGO.
Step 3: Choose Tinted Glass Permit from the options provided and proceed with the application.
