LEADING UNIVERSITIES across Africa strengthened their presence in global higher education rankings for 2026, with institutions from South Africa and Egypt dominating the continent’s top 10 list while Nigeria’s University of Ibadan (UI) emerged as the only West African university to secure a place among Africa’s highest ranked institutions.
JKNewsMedia reports that the 2026 to 2027 Best Global Universities rankings released by United States News & World Report (USNWR) assessed universities based on academic research performance, global reputation and regional reputation.
The rankings compare institutions worldwide and serve as a benchmark for students, researchers and policymakers evaluating higher education quality across countries.
Results from this year’s rankings show that South Africa and Egypt remain the continent’s higher education powerhouses, accounting for nine of Africa’s top 10 universities.

South Africa secured four places in the top 10, while Egypt claimed five.
Nigeria’s UI remained West Africa’s highest ranked university and the only Nigerian institution in Africa’s top 10.
However, the university placed fourth in Africa and 264th globally.
The University of Cape Town retained its position as Africa’s leading university, reflecting South Africa’s continued strength in research output, international collaboration and academic reputation.
The rankings are based primarily on research performance and reputation metrics rather than teaching quality or student experience.
U.S. News stated that students should also consider factors such as campus culture, location, programme strengths and affordability when choosing a university.
It also says that the rankings show that a small number of African universities are increasingly competing on the global stage as countries across the continent continue efforts to strengthen higher education, research infrastructure and international partnerships.
