ASUU Warns of 2025 Confrontation with FG Over Unresolved Issues

THE ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a potential long-drawn confrontation with the Federal Government in 2025 unless substantial efforts are made to address unresolved issues.

The union described last year’s government actions as “window-dressing” that failed to make a significant impact on the university sector.

ASUU criticised the government’s failure to resolve critical issues, including the non-release of withheld salaries, unpaid Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the lack of funding for university revitalisation.

The union, in a statement with the title: “2025, Year of Long Battle with FG”, also voiced its dissatisfaction with the government’s renegotiation attempts, calling for the immediate review and signing of the Nimi Briggs-led draft agreement, which addresses many of these concerns.

The ASUU also expressed deep concerns over the FG’s lack of commitment to public university funding and the declining condition of education in Nigeria.

ASUU also rejected tax reform bills aimed at replacing education taxes with a development levy, arguing that this would harm TETFund, the key funding body for university infrastructure.

ASUU’s statement made it clear that if the government fails to meet its expectations, 2025 could see another wave of strikes and educational crises, further hampering the country’s educational development.
