DELTA STATE athletes who dazzled at the Asaba 2022 National Sports Festival have finally begun receiving their long-awaited cash rewards, following the redemption of a pledge made by the state government.
The disbursement, confirmed in a statement by the Director of Public Relations at the Delta State Sports Commission, Mrs Franka Okonma, marks a critical milestone in the state’s ongoing commitment to supporting sporting excellence.
Chairman of the Commission, Hon Onoriode Oborevwori, described the payout as a major morale booster and hailed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for honouring the financial promise.
He stated that the move underscores the administration’s commitment to the “MORE Agenda”—an acronym representing Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced welfare.
“This payment is a clear testament to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s passion for sports and his dedication to the welfare of our athletes,” the Commission Chairman affirmed.
Athletes who competed under the Delta banner have expressed heartfelt appreciation to the governor, citing the cash rewards as both symbolic and practical encouragement.
They said the gesture had reignited their competitive spirit and strengthened their loyalty to the state’s sporting ambitions.
Delta State clinched the overall title at the Asaba 2022 Games, affirming its reputation as a formidable force in national sports.
The fulfilment of the governor’s promise further cements that dominance and raises expectations ahead of next month’s 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
As defending champions, the athletes pledged unwavering dedication to maintaining their top spot.
The government’s assurance of improved training facilities, quicker reward systems, and expanded development opportunities has added momentum to that goal.
Oborevwori added that with confidence riding high and motivation renewed, Delta State’s contingent is gearing up to defend their crown and extend their legacy in Nigerian sports.
