RELIEF AND academic materials have reached students of Government Junior Secondary School, Elekahia, Port Harcourt, following a strategic donation by leading financial institution Fidelity Bank Plc.
The support, channelled through the Fidelity Helping Hands Programme (FHHP), was spearheaded by the Suncrest Inductee Class—newly onboarded staff committed to community upliftment.
Under the FHHP framework, staff identify projects within their localities, raise funds internally, and receive an equivalent contribution from the bank’s management to implement the initiative.
The Elekahia school intervention delivered essential supplies such as exercise books, pens, socks, footwear, sanitary pads, shaving sticks, and snacks, aimed at improving classroom engagement and personal hygiene among students.
Dr Meksley Nwagboh, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications, underscored the bank’s long-standing focus on public schools due to the numerous challenges faced by pupils.
He noted the initiative’s 15-year legacy across Nigeria, stressing that Fidelity’s support is anchored in its philosophy of empowering future leaders through education and social inclusion.
He further highlighted the value of involving new staff in the process. “It’s important our employees understand the power of community service from the outset.
By investing in education, we’re shaping the country’s future,” Dr Nwagboh stated.
Principal of the school, Dr Ekeh Florence, conveyed profound gratitude, praising the rare generosity shown by the bank. She said the materials would greatly enhance students’ academic preparedness and self-esteem.
Many of the beneficiary pupils described the donation as a first-of-its-kind gesture from any corporate entity and expressed determination to honour the support by excelling academically; and they also linked the moment to new motivation and increased confidence in their future.
