EMPOWERMENT TOOK a bold step across Lagos as selected personnel of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), notably street sweepers, commenced hands-on training under the Glo Skillbridge initiative as an economic diversification programme aimed at equipping them with practical skills beyond sanitation duties.
Approximately 150 LAWMA staff members are currently participating in the programme’s first phase, which covers Fashion Designing, Bead Making, Baking, and Digital Skills.
The training is underway at accredited centres scattered across Lagos, including Gbagada, Yaba, and Costain, where early feedback points to a high level of enthusiasm and swift grasp of technical content.
Glo Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm behind the initiative, had earlier announced the programme during a staff recognition event, unveiling its strategy to foster multiple income streams for sweepers through vocational upskilling.
The Foundation has since lauded the dedication and pace of learning displayed by the beneficiaries.
At Yetroslane in Atunrase Estate, Gbagada, where Fashion and Bead Making modules are being delivered, trainees have already started showcasing their work.
Some were seen wearing self-crafted bead accessories by the third day. Participants including Amusat Mopelola Airat and Liadi Fatimoh expressed heartfelt gratitude to Glo Foundation and LAWMA, citing the rare opportunity to improve their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the baking track taking place at Bakery Initiatives in Yaba is also recording progress.
One of the sweepers and a supervisor, Mrs Busari Adebanke Busayo, reported that the sessions have enhanced her confidence and taught her precision in baking procedures.
She also noted that the skills would add economic value to her household.
In Costain, digital literacy classes hosted at ALX are proving particularly impactful. Mr Williams Oladipupo from Ikorodu shared that the knowledge would support his small business operations and aid his children’s education.
Another participant, Miss Udoh Blessing Endurance Francis, aged 22, highlighted the relevance of digital skills in today’s workforce, calling the initiative timely and transformative.
The four-week intensive programme, which commenced last week, is scheduled to conclude in July, marking a significant investment in human capital and long-term empowerment for Lagos waste management personnel.
