Glo Targets UTME Failure Crisis with Digital Exam Prep Service

MOUNTING CONCERN over dismal performance in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) has prompted telecoms giant Globacom to spotlight its Examination Preparatory Service as a potential solution for struggling students.

The service, designed to improve students’ performance in Computer-Based Tests, specifically targets major standardised exams, including the UTME, the West African Senior and Junior Secondary School Certificate Exams, and the IELTS. According to Glo, the tool is built to familiarise candidates with exam structure, question formats, and subject matter, offering structured revision tailored to boost outcomes.

This intervention comes in the wake of sobering figures released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on 5 May. More than 1.5 million out of the 1.9 million UTME candidates scored below 200. Detailed analysis revealed that 50.29% of candidates scored between 160 and 199, while nearly a quarter—488,197—scored between 140 and 159.

In a statement issued in Lagos, Globacom affirmed its commitment to tackling the root causes of such widespread academic underperformance. “The Glo Examination Preparatory Service will help combat poor examination performance, especially among secondary school students,” the company stated.

The service provides access to practice materials across twenty subjects, integrating educational videos and curated content. Users can subscribe by dialling 207916# and selecting their preferred examination category, including JSCE, SSCE, UTME, and A-Levels. Content is delivered daily, weekly, or monthly, with fees charged per subscription.

According to Glo, the system is designed not only to reinforce academic concepts but to actively promote self-assessment. “By engaging with these practice materials, students can identify areas of weakness, reinforce their understanding of key concepts, and develop effective exam-taking strategies,” it noted.

To incentivise engagement, the service also includes trivia games aligned with the exam syllabi. Top performers are eligible for airtime, data bundles, and cash rewards.
