THE CIRCULATION of a disturbing video showing students engaging in smoking and drinking inside a dormitory of a school has prompted swift action from the Lagos State Government.
The students, believed to be from Excel College, Ejigbo, were seen in the video consuming alcohol and displaying behaviour that the authorities described as unacceptable within the educational system of the state.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and signed by Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun Honourable Commissioner, on September 17, 2025, the government views the incident with utmost seriousness, noting that it undermines the values and behavioural standards expected in Lagos schools.
The ministry confirmed that the Office of Education Quality Assurance has commenced a full investigation to establish the authenticity of the video, verify the identities of the students involved, and assess the level of institutional oversight.
Officials also confirmed that a monitoring and investigation team has been deployed to the school, with preliminary engagements already underway with the school management.
The ministry stated that any school found culpable will face appropriate sanctions in line with state education policies and regulations.
The Commissioner also stressed the commitment of the state to safeguarding students’ wellbeing and upholding discipline across learning environments.
He said the government remains resolute in providing schools that are safe, disciplined, and conducive to both academic and moral growth.
Earlier in the day, the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) also addressed the incident in a separate statement signed by its Executive Chairman, Aare Taoheed Adebayo Taiwo.
The council noted that it had been alerted to the viral video allegedly involving students of Our Excel College, Ejigbo, and condemned the actions captured.
The LCDA described the behaviour as immoral, harmful to children’s upbringing, and unacceptable within the community.
The council appealed to members of the public to desist from further circulating the video, warning that doing so amplifies the negative act and risks damaging the dignity and future of the children involved.
The statement further explained that the LCDA had taken immediate steps to intervene by engaging stakeholders, including parents, school authorities, security agencies, and medical personnel, to conduct a thorough investigation.
The council emphasised that disciplinary measures would be applied against all those found culpable to serve as a deterrent and prevent future incidents.
The Ejigbo LCDA reiterated its commitment to promoting the moral, academic, and social wellbeing of students in the community.
It pledged continued collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure that schools remain disciplined and value-driven, safeguarding both the academic progress and moral development of learners.
