PROFOUND SADNESS has been expressed by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) over the death of Dr Doyin Abiola, former Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the defunct Concord Newspapers, at the age of 82.
In a statement signed by President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the NGE described Dr Abiola as a trailblazing journalist whose career broke gender barriers and inspired generations of practitioners.
The guild stated that her professional journey, from reporter to becoming the first woman to edit a national newspaper in Nigeria and later the first female Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of a newspaper in the country, remains a landmark in the history of the Nigerian press.
The NGE statement recalled her leadership at Concord Newspapers as a period defined by resilience, excellence, and a steadfast commitment to press freedom.
It also highlighted her advocacy for gender equity and national development, noting that she mentored numerous journalists who have since distinguished themselves in the profession.
According to the NGE, Dr Abiola’s courage during the military era, when she faced harassment and threats, underscored her unwavering dedication to journalistic integrity.
The guild stressed that her achievements continue to serve as a benchmark for the profession and a reminder that a person’s legacy is measured by the positive impact they leave behind.
While praying for the repose of her soul, the NGE expressed deep appreciation for her contributions to Nigerian journalism, stating that her life and work remain an enduring source of inspiration for those committed to excellence in the media, regardless of gender or circumstance.
