THE FEDERAL Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a national public holiday in celebration of Democracy Day.
This announcement is to honour 26 uninterrupted years of civilian governance in Africa’s most populous nation.
The declaration came from Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, who announced the holiday on Sunday in a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
The minister extended congratulations to Nigerians for sustaining 26 years of civil rule, commending the country’s resilience, courage, and strength throughout this period.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” Tunji-Ojo said.
“The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope renewed more than ever.”
Under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria remains steadfast in its commitment to democratic principles.
The government affirms that the freely expressed choices of its citizens continue to shape the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural directions.
FG also noted that with June 12 now a public holiday, Nigerians will enjoy two public holidays within the span of a single week between June 8 and June 15.
