VISA REFUSALS issued to Nigerian applicants reached 1,344,595 between 2005 and the first quarter of 2026, placing Nigeria second globally for total UK visa refusals behind India, according to data from the United Kingdom Home Office.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the data showed that Nigerians accounted for 44.4% of all UK visa refusals across Africa during the 21-year period.
It also showed that the UK granted 2,723,558 visas to Nigerians, making Nigeria the third highest recipient of UK visas worldwide after India and China.
Nigeria also emerged as the largest recipient of UK entry clearance visas in Africa ahead of South Africa with 1,638,538 visas and Egypt with 695,606 visas.
It was also reported that the dataset covered decisions across visitor, study, work, family and other visa routes.
The figures showed that Nigeria recorded a cumulative refusal rate of 33.1% over the period, compared with the global average of 14.8%.
Out of about 4.09 million applications submitted by Nigerians, 4,068,153 received issued or refused decisions.
Nigeria’s 1,344,595 refusals represented 15.2% of the 8,829,638 UK visa refusals recorded worldwide.
The data also showed that Nigerians submitted 6.8% of all global applications during the period.
Visitor visa applications accounted for the largest share of refusals with 1,127,088 denials, representing 83.8% of Nigeria’s total refusals and a refusal rate of 37.1%.
Study visa applications recorded 130,712 refusals with a 20.5% refusal rate.
Work visa applications recorded 41,410 refusals, while 12,217 family visa applications were declined.
The data showed that 2006 recorded the highest refusal rate for Nigerian applicants at 49.6%, with 117,968 applications refused.
By 2023, the refusal rate had fallen to 21% as the UK granted a record 281,658 visas to Nigerians in a single year following the post pandemic travel boom.
Among African countries, Ghana recorded 374,108 refusals with a refusal rate of 40.5%.
Algeria recorded 191,903 refusals at 41.7%, Egypt 134,055 at 16.2%, Zimbabwe 102,246 at 26%, Morocco 93,722 at 22.2%, Kenya 75,973 at 18.8%, Uganda 64,759 at 34.9%, South Africa 61,521 at 3.6% and Sudan 59,069 at 31%.
JKNewsMedia.com also reports that across all nationalities, the UK processed 60,063,475 visa applications between 2005 and the first quarter of 2026.
It issued 50,873,344 visas and refused 8,829,638 applications.
African applicants submitted 11,433,508 applications, representing 9% of the global total, and recorded 3,027,198 refusals.
According to UK immigration experts and legal analysts, common reasons for refusals include irregular fund transfers, weak economic ties to Nigeria, disorganised documentation and omission of previous immigration or legal history.
