THE NAME of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun remains unchanged, the Ogun State Government has confirmed, dismissing circulating claims of a rebrand to honour the late Awujale of Ijebuland.
Clarifying widespread speculation, the government explained that the institution has not been renamed Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona University of Education.
It noted that a separate institution such as the Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in Omu – already bears the late monarch’s name in recognition of his legacy.
Established in 1977 as the Ogun State College of Education, the institution underwent a name change to Tai Solarin College of Education, Science and Technology in 1994, before becoming Tai Solarin University of Education in 2005.
That transition triggered jurisdictional debates over its authority to issue both Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and degree qualifications.
Addressing those concerns, the previous administration separated the institution into two distinct entities.
The Tai Solarin College of Education was moved to Omu, while the university in Ijagun retained its original name and academic structure.
In 2022, Governor Dapo Abiodun approved the renaming of the Omu campus to Sikiru Kayode Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology.
The move, according to the government, was part of formal steps to honour the contributions of the late monarch.
Abiodun acknowledged previous measures taken to preserve the monarch’s legacy.
However, he made no mention of renaming the Tai Solarin University of Education, which now falls under the oversight of the federal government.
The government urged the public to disregard unfounded reports of a name change, reaffirming that the Tai Solarin University of Education remains unchanged in identity and operation.
