Princess Opeyemi Bright, Born To Nigerian Parents, Becomes UK’s Youngest Mayor

BARRIERS FELL in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham as the youngest Mayor in United Kingdom (UK) history officially took office, marking a historic moment in British local governance.

Princess Opeyemi Bright, 29, was sworn in on Friday, 16 May 2025, becoming the borough’s First Citizen and a new face of leadership across the UK.

Born to Nigerian parents in Britain, her rise has been hailed as a breakthrough for youth, diversity, and diaspora excellence.

“This is nothing short of God’s grace,” she told attendees at her inauguration. “I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.”

Her political career began at just 22, when she was elected councillor.

Over seven years, she earned recognition as a dedicated champion for youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic opportunity.

Her trailblazing ascent also honours a family tradition of public service—her mother, Dr Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, while her father,

Pastor Gbolahan Bright, MBE, is a senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

This historic moment also reflects a wider wave of Nigerian contributions to international leadership.

From Kemi Badenoch in the UK Cabinet to Chi Onwurah in Parliament, Uzoma Asagwara in Canada, and Esther Agbaje in the United States, Nigerians in the diaspora are reshaping global narratives and redefining representation.

Bright’s victory is noted to offer a clear rebuttal to perceptions of youth disengagement from politics.

Her emergence as Mayor is also described as a proof that young leaders especially women—can redefine public life with vision, courage, and integrity.

Policy analysts say her journey should urge Nigerian stakeholders to harness the potential of the diaspora and invest in strategic leadership development.

For many, her success is not just a personal achievement but a public inspiration—proof that leadership is within reach for any young person ready to serve with purpose.
