LAGOS STATE Government has directed residents in parts of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle to move from lowland areas to higher ground to avoid the dangers of flooding.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, listed Ajilete axis of Ajegunle, Majidu in Ikorodu, and certain parts of the Lekki corridor as locations where residents should consider relocation.

He also warned residents of Isheri in the OPIC area to remain on high alert. Wahab clarified that Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja are considered safe zones.

He noted that the coastal nature of Lagos makes it highly susceptible to climate change impacts, predicting flash floods across the state.

Based on Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts, he stated that Lagos will record heavier rainfall this year compared to 2024.

His comments came after heavy rains from Sunday night to Monday evening caused flooding in several communities.

Viral videos showed submerged homes, vehicles, and streets, with residents wading through floodwaters as clogged drains and canals overflowed, disrupting trade and daily activities.

Wahab assured that the state government is clearing drainage systems and expanding flood channels to reduce the impact of flooding.

He emphasised that while flash floods are inevitable due to natural conditions, the state’s focus remains on resilient infrastructure and public responsibility.
