FINANCIAL BARRIERS continue to hinder access to quality education for many brilliant students in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

To bridge this gap, Accugas Limited, a subsidiary of Savannah Energy PLC, has awarded full university scholarships to 50 students as part of the Savannah Energy Education and Internship Training (SEE-IT) programme.

At a ceremony in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, officials confirmed that the package covers tuition, accommodation, study materials, and living expenses for the entire duration of each recipient’s tertiary education, whether in public or private universities.

Beneficiaries will also receive leadership and peak performance training throughout their academic journey to help them excel.

Upon graduation, they will have the opportunity to intern at Savannah Energy, gaining hands-on experience in a global-standard work environment.

The SEE-IT programme, launched in 2023, aims to provide access to higher education for talented but financially disadvantaged students, contributing to the socio-economic growth of the region and Nigeria.

Last year, it expanded to include Environmental Awareness Clubs in 20 public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom, encouraging career development and environmental sustainability.

The initiative culminated in a quiz competition, where the top five winners earned cash prizes and automatic scholarships for the next academic session.

Pade Durotoye, Managing Director of Savannah Energy Nigeria, described the initiative as transformative:

“We believe education unlocks potential, and many talented individuals struggle due to financial constraints. This scholarship changes lives—not just for the recipients but for their families and the entire economy. This is more than education; it is transformation.”

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Bassey Eno, commended Savannah Energy’s commitment to education, calling on other corporate entities to follow suit:

“This initiative exemplifies true Corporate Social Responsibility. Investing in the education of our children aligns with our administration’s A.R.I.S.E. Agenda. We encourage other organisations to contribute towards skills development and educational empowerment.”

Nkoyo Etuk, Head of Stakeholder Relations and Regional Manager, South East, Savannah Energy Nigeria, highlighted the rigorous selection process, noting that 1,481 applications were received, and finalists underwent a transparent, merit-based screening involving computer-based tests and interviews conducted by university professors.

“We are delighted to support the next generation of students, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4—Quality Education. This is part of our commitment to fostering socio-economic prosperity in our host communities,” Etuk added.

He also adds that the SEE-IT programme continues to shape the future of education in the region, demonstrating how corporate intervention can drive sustainable development and economic empowerment.
