Telecom Operators Warn of Service Shedding Over Stagnant Tariffs

SOME NIGERIANS face imminent disruptions to call and Internet services as telecommunications operators threaten service shedding due to unresolved tariff issues.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) raised the alarm on Monday, highlighting the urgent need for tariff reviews to sustain the telecoms industry.

ALTON Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, stated that rising operational costs, soaring energy expenses, inflation, and volatile exchange rates have pushed operators, including MTN, Airtel, and Glo, to a breaking point.

Without immediate action, millions of Nigerians could face disconnection.

Adebayo warned that service shedding could limit telecom services in specific areas and during certain times, impacting businesses, education, healthcare, and security.

He stressed that economic fallout and disruption across critical sectors were inevitable without intervention.

He urged stakeholders to act swiftly, emphasising that failure to address the crisis could undermine one of Nigeria’s key development pillars.

ALTON pledged collaboration to secure the industry’s sustainability in 2025 and beyond.
