THE CRITICAL shortage of accommodation for Nigerian Army personnel has received a major boost with the commissioning of a new barracks in Abuja by President Bola Tinubu.

The facility, named “Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks,” includes residential quarters for officers, soldiers, and their families, alongside modern amenities such as worship centres, sports facilities, and a powerhouse.

The barracks, located in Asokoro, feature 16 Major Generals Quarters, 34 Brigadier Generals Quarters, 60 Major–Colonel Flats, and 60 Lieutenant–Captain Flats.

It also provides 180 flats for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers and 264 flats for Corporals and Below, offering housing for 614 personnel, including 170 officers and 444 soldiers.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu during the event for his commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel.

He noted that naming the barracks after the President symbolises recognition of his extraordinary support for the army.

Oluyede credited his predecessors, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya and the late Lt-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, for initiating the project to address the growing accommodation demands of the Nigerian Army in Abuja.

He described their actions as bold and visionary, laying the foundation for the successful completion of the barracks.

“This project represents only phases one and two of the original plans,” Oluyede stated.

He detailed the additional infrastructure, including family quarters designed for various ranks, ensuring comfortable living conditions for personnel and their families.

Despite the significant milestone, Oluyede highlighted the ongoing challenge of inadequate housing across the Nigerian Army.

He called for continued federal support to tackle the accommodation gap and ensure frontline troops are properly reintegrated into barracks after operations.

President Tinubu, while inaugurating the facility, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of military personnel.

He commended the army’s sacrifices in ensuring national security and pledged continued support for projects that enhance their living and working conditions.
