NIGERIA’s ECONOMY recorded an early breakthrough as the 2025 revenue target was surpassed in August, President Bola Tinubu announced in Abuja.
He attributed the achievement to economic reforms deliberately focused on stimulating the non-oil sector, noting that the bulk of the revenue was generated outside crude oil earnings.
The President gave the assurance that the Renewed Hope Agenda remained anchored on building infrastructure, strengthening health facilities, securing food sovereignty, and improving national security.
Addressing a meeting at the Presidential Villa with founding members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change and the Buhari Organisation, led by former Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Tinubu said the economy was moving in the right direction.
According to him, the stabilisation of the economy had ended the period when traders relied on foreign exchange speculation to conduct business.
“The economy is now stabilised. Nobody is trading pieces of paper for foreign exchange anymore. The economy is now predictable.
“You do not need to know the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, to obtain foreign exchange or import goods,” he stated.
The President stressed that government priority was to expand export capacity and generate jobs. “What we need now is building the ship and the vessels for the export of our goods and creating more jobs for our people,” he said.
He explained that the federal government would establish agricultural mechanisation centres across all regions to expand cultivation, boost capacity, improve harvests, and entrench food sovereignty.
“We are going to have trainees. That programme is our path to food sovereignty,” he added.
Reflecting on his longstanding ties with the CPC, Tinubu described the merger with the Buhari Organisation as a “sweet memory” and expressed gratitude for the group’s support. “When I see people like you, I am determined to work harder,” he said.
The President further pledged to sustain the legacies of former President Muhammadu Buhari, announcing plans to immortalise him with a Buhari House and promising more opportunities in government for CPC members.
Tinubu thanked the delegation for their support, noting: “Thank you for your patience until now. But first of all, we must cure the economy and bring hope to the people, which is what we stand for. Thank you for believing in me.”
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, expressed gratitude to the President for his magnanimity and commitment to the people and government of Katsina State.
Abbas also praised Tinubu’s vision and broadmindedness in accommodating diverse political stakeholders.
Leader of the delegation Al-Makura stated that members of the former CPC remained committed to the success of the APC government.
He thanked the President for his presence during the final rites of former President Buhari, describing Tinubu’s participation as a source of reassurance.
“You not only buried President Buhari but also honoured him and ensured a befitting state burial with full military honours. Above all, your presence throughout the ceremony was comforting as it was reassuring,” Al-Makura said.
He assured Tinubu of continued loyalty, declaring: “This is to assure you that we believe in your administration, and that will be our focus and commitment to ensure the success of our party and your ultimate victory in the 2027 elections.”
