NIGERIA’s AMBITION to revive its textile industry has gained renewed momentum as Ogun State prepares to host the world’s largest cotton and polyester processing factory under the federal government’s Renewed Hope Cotton Resurgent Initiative.
A transformative textile industrial complex will soon rise in Ogun State as Nigeria prepares to host the world’s largest cotton and polyester processing facility.
Set within the Special Agro Processing Zone at the Gateway International Airport, Iperu/Ilisan axis, the megafactory will span 400 hectares and is projected to generate employment for approximately 250,000 people daily.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will personally lead the groundbreaking ceremony within the next 30 to 45 days.
Governor Abiodun made the announcement during a courtesy visit by former Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs Oluwatoyin Madein, and members of the Iperu Development Association at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
“The economic impact of this project on Iperu, its neighbouring communities, and the entire state will be immeasurable,” the governor stated, underlining the long-term value of the facility as a centrepiece of industrial and employment growth.
In a further boost to the area’s strategic importance, the Nigerian Air Force has proposed establishing a base in Iperu, a move the governor says will enhance the security framework around the airport and adjoining economic zones.
Abiodun highlighted the centrality of Iperu as a pivotal factor in its selection for major infrastructure projects, describing it as a nexus that connects all regions of Ogun State. He added that the Airport Housing Estate—comprising 100 newly developed units—is now complete and ready for commissioning.
The governor also cited several development milestones in Iperu, including the reconstruction of the old Ibadan Road, extensive township road upgrades, public school renovations, and the commissioning of a specialist mother-and-child hospital.
These, he said, exemplify his administration’s grassroots-focused development agenda.
Governor Abiodun took a moment to commend Mrs Madein for her distinguished service at both state and federal levels, describing her as a source of pride for Ogun State.
Mrs Madein, in turn, expressed appreciation to the governor for fostering a conducive investment climate that has helped attract critical national projects to the state.
She stated that her visit was to provide a post-tenure briefing and extend personal gratitude for his support throughout her career.
Chairman of the Iperu Development Association, Otunba Taiwo Oyebanjo, applauded the governor’s leadership and Mrs Madein’s commitment, stating that Iperu had witnessed significant socio-economic transformation in recent years.
Echoing these sentiments, the Ebi of Idena, Oba Lukman Salami, praised the governor’s developmental strides, describing the elevation of Iperu’s regional standing as a testament to sustained visionary governance.
