US Defends Visa Validity Cut As Technical Adjustment, Not Political Retaliation

MISCONCEPTIONS SORROUNDING the reduced validity of United States (US) nonimmigrant visas for Nigerian citizens have been firmly dismissed by the US Mission in Nigeria, which clarified that the decision stems from a routine global review rather than political considerations or diplomatic tensions.

A statement released by the Mission on Friday confirmed the adjustment is part of a broader worldwide reassessment of US visa usage.

The evaluation, it stated, follows established technical and security criteria aimed at reinforcing the integrity of America’s immigration systems.

It stressed that the shortened visa validity has no link to Nigeria’s domestic policies, its stance on deportees from third countries, or its relationships with international alliances such as BRICS.

The US Mission reaffirmed that the change is not targeted at Nigeria or any particular nation. “This reduction is not the result of any country’s policy positions or political affiliations,” the statement declared, affirming that the decision aligns with Washington’s internal immigration protocols and national security standards.

Amid speculation and concern, the US government reiterated its strong bilateral relationship with Nigeria, promising continued collaboration with Nigerian authorities.

It affirmed its commitment to upholding safe and lawful travel procedures that support mutual interests between the two nations.

“We are dedicated to working with Nigerian authorities to help meet these criteria and benchmarks,” the statement read, pointing to shared goals of enhancing secure mobility and deepening institutional partnerships.
