LEAVING LEGACY of Activism and Justice, veteran nationalist and political stalwart, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has died at the age of 96.

His family confirmed he passed away peacefully on Friday morning, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos home.

A lifelong advocate for justice, democracy, and national unity, Adebanjo remained an unwavering voice in Nigeria’s political landscape for over seven decades.

As a legal practitioner, journalist, and politician, he played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic struggles, championing the ideals of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, Adebanjo initially pursued journalism before travelling to the United Kingdom to study law.

He was called to the English Bar in 1961. His political journey began in the 1940s as a Zikist and later as a founding member of the Action Group, serving as the party’s organising secretary.

His dedication to the progressive movement saw him imprisoned in 1963 alongside Awolowo.

Throughout Nigeria’s post-independence history, Adebanjo remained a critical voice against military dictatorship, particularly after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

As a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), he fought for the restoration of democracy, placing him among Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen.

The family, in a statement signed by his children, expressed their profound loss, describing him as a patriot who spent his life advocating for truth, equity, and good governance.

They announced that consultations were ongoing with associates and various interest groups to plan his funeral, with details to be communicated soon.

A condolence register has been opened at his Lagos residence at 8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, and at his country home in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.

President Tinubu Extols Adebanjo

President Bola Tinubu mourned Adebanjo’s passing, recognising his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.

In his tribute, Tinubu acknowledged Adebanjo’s principled activism, particularly his role in resisting military rule and shaping Nigeria’s democratic discourse.

The president described him as a father figure and a steadfast supporter, despite political differences in later years.

He also described the Late Adebanjo as a leading figure of the Afenifere socio-cultural group.

“Adebanjo remained politically active until his last days.”

His endorsement of Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election highlighted his enduring commitment to the principles of fairness and progressivism.

Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
