LONDON BASED photographer and artist Ejatu Shaw appeared this week on African Voices, the magazine programme on CNN International sponsored by Globacom.
Glo notes that the British-Sierra Leonean creative was born in 1996 and graduated from the University of Westminster with a Master’s Degree in Photography Arts in 2020.
Shaw first developed an interest in photography during a family vacation to Sierra Leone in 2013.
Her work draws influence from African studio photographers of the 1960s and 1970s including Malick Sidibé, Sory Sanlé and Omar Yahia Barram.
Her images explore facets of identity through a fusion of her Islamic faith and African heritage.
She went on to create visual reflections based on her recollections from these influences.
Her work has since explored ancestry through self-portraiture and themes rooted in personal expression.
Shaw was recognised as a New Wave Creative by the British Fashion Council in 2025.

During the same year, she photographed Usain Bolt for Puma, Cynthia Erivo for The Guardian, Sunday Times and Vogue, and Angela Bassett for EBONY.
