Sterling Bank Offers Free Rides to Ease Transportation Burdens in Lagos

FOLLOWING THE success of its Zero Transfer Fees campaign, Sterling Bank has extended its support to easing the daily burdens faced by Lagosians by providing free transportation throughout May 2025.

The initiative, which began last week, sees branded buses stationed at major locations across Lagos, including Obalende, Ikorodu, TBS, and Oshodi.

For many residents, where transport costs are a significant part of their daily expenses, these free rides provide more than just a lift home—they represent a tangible act of corporate care.

This initiative builds on earlier efforts to eliminate bank transfer fees through its OneBank platform. It extends the same commitment to financial freedom by addressing one of the city’s most pressing needs—affordable transport.

The bank’s gesture directly responds to the challenges faced by Lagosians, where the cost of a bus fare can often make or break a family’s budget.

Market trader Mary E., from Oshodi, shared her thoughts after experiencing the free ride: “This is the first time a bank is not just advertising but acting. I’ve saved on transfers all month thanks to OneBank, and today, I saved on my transport. Sterling really gets it.”

For Amaka I., a single mother and hairdresser from Ajah, the initiative came as a much-needed blessing. “We Lagos people work so hard just to move. Today, I didn’t have to count Naira for my bus fare. That is dignity. That is respect,” she said.

Chidimma Okoli, Sterling’s Masterbrand Marketing Lead, explained the deeper philosophy behind the initiative: “Financial systems have for too long extracted from Nigerians,” she noted.

“At Sterling, we are making a different choice. We are giving back, not just in naira and kobo, but in opportunities, in relief, and in real dignity.”

The bank’s free bus rides also build on past efforts to support Nigerians during critical times, including during the pandemic and after the removal of fuel subsidies.

Okoli emphasised that the focus now is on building “new victories” with the people who trust the bank with their financial journeys.

Behind this visible transformation is a powerful digital infrastructure that can handle over 180 million transactions, allowing the bank to absorb costs that would otherwise fall on its customers, making the initiative sustainable.

As the month of May continues, the bank encourages riders to share their experiences online, amplifying the message that Nigeria deserves a financial system that moves people forward, rather than holding them back.
