WORRIED BY mounting issues with misallocated funds, lawmakers have taken decisive steps to amend the national budget for 2025.

The National Assembly confirmed making adjustments designed to rectify discrepancies affecting various federal ministries, departments, and agencies.

They said the recurrent (non-debt) expenditure was raised from N13 trillion to N13.5 trillion, while capital expenditure underwent a corresponding reduction from N23.9 trillion to N23.4 trillion.

Despite these revisions, NASS says the overall budget remains fixed at N54.9 trillion, preserving earlier enhancements approved on 13 February.

Lawmakers, including the Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, scrutinised detailed line items spanning defence, police, pensions, and several key ministries.

They noted that the review enabled them to identify errors in allocations such as the reduced Presidency funding and revised figures for agriculture and education.

Moreover, they noted that, although the amendment has secured overwhelming legislative support, final implementation still awaits presidential assent.
