AT 18, a Nigerian-American poet has been named the 2026-2027 United States (U.S.) National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th recipient of the prestigious title and the second Nigerian-American to earn the honour.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the 18-year-old, who was raised in Nigeria before moving to the US at 13, rose from local poetry competitions to the national stage.
“Meet Daniel Umemezie, the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, the 10th poet to hold this prestigious title, and the second Nigerian-American to do so, following 2023 laureate Salome Agbaroji!” the U.S. Mission said.
Umemezie follows Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to receive the title in 2023.

JKNewsMedia.com also reports that the U.S. Mission praised Umemezie’s ability to use poetry to capture the richness and complexity of life while highlighting the importance of young people in creative expression.
It described his achievement as an example of how talented young people can use creativity to thrive, lead and inspire others.
Umemezie uses poetry to explore themes of heritage, identity and the complexities of the Nigerian-American experience.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Mission Nigeria celebrated his achievement across its social media platforms, describing him as a gifted Nigerian-American voice whose poetry bridges heritage, identity and the Nigerian-American experience.
