Two British-Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, have received official congratulations from President Bola Tinubu following their historic inauguration as mayors in London.
The President commended both Bright and Jackson for upholding the legacy of excellence among Nigerians in the diaspora.
Their commitment to honesty, integrity, hard work, and public service, the President noted, continues to uplift Nigeria’s global reputation.
President Tinubu also expressed confidence that their journeys would serve as inspiration for young Nigerians worldwide to pursue service with honour and distinction.
Opeyemi Bright was formally sworn in as the Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, becoming the youngest mayor in the borough’s history at age 29.
Her appointment follows seven years of dedicated service in local government. Jason Jackson also achieved a milestone, becoming the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough’s founding in 1900, having advanced through council ranks with distinction.
Bright entered public office at 22 as Barking and Dagenham’s youngest Labour councillor in 2018. Jackson joined Islington Council in 2022 and quickly rose to become Chair of the Homes and Communities Committee in 2023.
Congratulating them on behalf of the Nigerian government and people, President Tinubu praised their achievements and encouraged both mayors to continue serving with excellence.
“I have every confidence in your abilities and look forward to the positive impact you will make in your respective boroughs,” he stated.
